Fossilized Oak Inflorescence in Baltic Amber

Origin: Baltic Region (Lithuania) Geological Age: Eocene Epoch (approx. 56–33.9 million years ago)

1.2 cm x 0.7 cm x 0.3 cm; 0.2 grams

Description: This exquisite piece of Baltic amber preserves a complete oak inflorescence—the flowering structure of an ancient Quercus tree—the very species whose resin created the amber itself. In a remarkable act of botanical self-preservation, a catkin-like cluster of blossoms was engulfed by fresh resin and sealed against decay for over 40 million years.

The specimen displays the flower’s slender, thread-like filaments fanning gracefully through the golden matrix, anchored by a compact central axis studded with tiny bead-like floral structures. Several primary gas bubbles cling to the inflorescence, original pockets of trapped air that have survived since the moment of entombment—each one a microscopic time capsule of the Eocene atmosphere. The clarity of the surrounding succinite is exceptional, allowing every hair-thin filament to be traced in three dimensions.

Botanical inclusions are far less common than insect entrapments in Baltic amber, and identifiable reproductive structures such as this are especially sought after. This specimen offers a rare, tangible link between the amber-producing trees and the forests they once formed.

Key Features:

Identifiable Botanical Inclusion: A preserved oak (Quercus) flowering structure from the Baltic Eocene.
Primary Gas Bubbles: Original trapped air pockets adhering to the plant tissue.
Fine Morphological Detail: Individual filaments and floral beads clearly resolved.
Gem-Quality Matrix: Clear, warm honey-colored Lithuanian succinite with natural polish.
